The Creation of Adam

This past weekend, I had the honor of officiating the wedding of two dear friends. My intention was to create something both specific to the couple and yet universal to all human beings. I’m sharing it here for your inspiration and enjoyment.

Friends and family, welcome!

We are here to celebrate the love of two beautiful human beings that are near and dear to all of our hearts, [*Bride] and [Groom].

Several months ago, these two asked me to officiate. I was honored to say yes.

And when I started thinking about what I was going to say during this ceremony, I kept coming back to an image that has been present for me all year. It’s a famous image. A painting, actually.

It’s The Creation of Adam. The painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo. Does everyone know what I’m talking about? God reaching out. Adam reaching out.

I really love that image. I even had the opportunity to stand under it a number of years ago during a visit to Italy. After hours in line at the Vatican during a very hot day, I made it into the Sistine Chapel and I looked up.

I saw a human reaching out. Reaching out to the divine. And there was God — the divine — not just up there sitting on some throne…
