Soul Mates Aren’t Forever

A good friend told me recently he just met his soul mate. That’s big news! When I first met him 2 years ago, he was scared he would “never find love.”

But what is a “soul mate” exactly? Is it the human being we’ll love forever? “Till death do us part,” right?

It’s become clear to me that what we refer to with “soul mate” is how DEEP that person touches us. When no one has touched our soul so deep before that is our soul mate. In other words:

Love is distinguished by its depth.

And that happens now. In fact, anything happening is happening NOW. So being touched that deeply is a now-phenomenon. It has NOTHING to do with time. In fact, it transcends time (but we’ll get to that later).

So it’s happening NOW, but because being touched that deeply feels so damn good (!!) we have a desire for that feeling (experience) to continue. It’s us saying “More of this!” And so we make a “prediction” (based on desire) that the relationship will continue forever. Maybe not even a prediction, but a hope. And many times, with that prediction/hope we create rules and promises to go along with it.

We confuse “soul mates” with this “forever” thing… but the time component is not the fundamental essence of what’s happening.
